Curse-Breakers (a poem)

I am the granddaughter of alcoholics,

workaholics, schizophrenics, and religious zealots.

Yes, I’m a mess, but I’m working through it.

I’m not sticking my head in the clouds.

I am the daughter of narcissists,

toxic positivists, denialists, and evangelists.

Yes, I’m a mess, but I’m working through it.

I’m not sticking my head in the sand.

I am the great-great-great granddaughter of warriors,

conquerors, fighters, and survivors.

Yes, I’m a mess, but I’m working through it.

I’m fighting the battle within.

I won’t hurt other people

rather than deal with my pain.

I won’t keep hurting myself

to keep them from feeling their shame.

I am the mother of lovers,

believers, empathizers, and self-aware leaders.

This time around, I’m not passing it on.

Not without a fight.

We are the great-great-great grandparents of all

that we wish we could be,

a future our ancestors couldn’t have

imagined in their wildest dreams.

This time around, we’re not passing it on.

Not without fight.

Yes, we’re a mess, but we’re not giving up,

and that’s what our children will see.
